60th Anniversary Celebration

As the Chairman, I am more than honoured to be witnessing the 60^th anniversary of the Joint Council.

Since its establishment in 1964, the Joint Council has been working alongside rehabilitation organisations, self-help groups and people with disabilities, advocating for services for people with disabilities and improving their lives through participation in policymaking. Today, the Joint Council has over 130 agency members and 30 individual members. I would like to express my heartfelt thanks to all members, government departments and partners. It is through your support that the Joint Council has been able to thrive and grow.

To celebrate the 60th anniversary of the Joint Council, we have thoroughly reviewed our work, achievements and challenges over the past years. Furthermore, we have organized the “Talent Development Program for Young People with Disabilities” to encourage the participation of young generation in public and social affairs. It is hoped that our mission can be carried forward and passed on.

In the future, we will continue upholding our mission and joining hands with the sector as to strive for the welfare of persons with disabilities.

The Chairperson of the Hong Kong Joint Council for People with Disabilities

Inspired by the past development and future vision of the Joint Council, this anniversary logo incorporates elements symbolizing “infinity”. The design intertwines the number “60” which signifies the Joint Council always keeps abreast of the times and is unceasing.

The design is connected to three core elements:

Continuity – Infinity: Embodies the sustainability and cohesiveness of the Joint Council’s services. Working with one heart, we are an inseparable body which always forges ahead. The numeral “60” symbolizes the “infinity” which implies our achievements will be passed down and sustained.
Diversity – Innovation: Reflects the continuous expansion into new service scopes by the Joint Council and also illustrates the concept of embracing diversity and innovation.
Development – Succession: Describes our continuous endeavours to open up new horizons.

The anniversary logo adopts purple and yellow as the main color tone. Purple contains the qualities of wisdom, elegance and innovation which depicts the Joint Council’s aspirations for continuous enhancement and development. Yellow symbolizes knowledge, brightness and hope which illustrates the Joint Council’s commitment in upholding its core values. Through the choices of the two colours, we hope the anniversary logo can encapsulate the brilliant history and bright future of the Joint Council. We will keep consolidating the efforts by different sectors and making improvements continuously.

Lastly, we would like to thank for Ms Rabi Yim, the Vice Chairperson of the Joint Council, for design the anniversary logo.

1964

Establishment of the Hong Kong Joint Council for People with Disabilities

1965

Since the Joint Council and the Hong Kong Council of Social Service (HKCSS) shared similar goals, both parties agreed that the Joint Council would be equivalent to the rehabilitation team of HKCSS

1968

Organized the "4th Pan-Pacific Rehabilitation Conference" with an attendance of over 1,000 participants

1974

The government agreed to formulate the "Rehabilitation Programme Plan" at the suggestion of the Joint Council

1977

Launched the "Rehabus Pilot Scheme"

1982

Produced the first edition of "A Guide for Physically Handicapped Visitors to Hong Kong"

1986

Established the Hong Kong Conductive Education Committee as to develop a Hong Kong model of conductive education, which was later widely applied in rehabilitation units of Hong Kong and the Mainland

1987

Facilitated the establishment of the Asia’s first Rehabilitation Engineering Clinic at the Hong Kong Polytechnic University (formerly the Hong Kong Polytechnic)

1991

Held the "3rd International Abilympics", over 2,000 contestants from overseas, the Mainland and local attended

Co-organized the "First Outstanding Persons with Disabilities Award" with the Rotary Club of Admiralty, which subsequently became an annual or biennial event

1993

Organized the first “International Day of Persons with Disabilities" in collaboration with government departments, 18 District Councils and the rehabilitation sector

1994

Assisted in coordinating the government's launch of the "Certificate for Picking Up or Setting Down of Passengers with Disabilities in Restricted Zones" scheme to facilitate travel for people with disabilities

1998

Organized the "11th International Asia-Pacific Rehabilitation Conference and the 98 Asia-Pacific Disabled Persons Decade Movement"

2000

Organized the "Exemplary Taxi Driver Award" with the Transport Department with an aim to promote the provision of quality services for passengers with disabilities

2002

Organized the "10th Anniversary of International Day of Persons with Disabilities" and the "2nd Asian and Pacific Decade of Persons with Disabilities"

2003

Organized the "1st Conference for Persons with Intellectual Disabilities in Hong Kong"

2004

Participated in the "Alliance of Persons with Disabilities for Concessionary Public Transport Fare"

2005

Organized the "1st Conference for Ex-Mentally Ill Patients in Hong Kong"

Organized the “1st Sign Language Interpreter Assessment Scheme"

2007

Organized the "Inclusive Environment Recognition Scheme"

2008

Organized the "1st 18-Districts Caring Employers Recognition Scheme”

Established the "Committee for Promotion of the United Nation Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities"

2012

Organized the “20th Anniversary of International Day of Persons with Disabilities”, including the "UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities – the Rights-based Approach" Forum, a luncheon to promote the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, and 18-districts exhibition

Travelled to Geneva, Switzerland to reflect to the United Nations on the implementation of the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities in Hong Kong

2015

Organized the “1st Certificate Course in Professional Sign Language Interpretation” under the Qualifications Framework

2017

Organized the "2017 Hong Kong Conference" with Workability International and Workability Asia

2021

Raised resources with HKCSS to cater the needs of people with disabilities and their caregivers during the pandemic

2023

Awarded by the Rehabilitation International with the Centennial Outstanding Contribution Award

Organized the "Second-tier Management Training Program" to cultivate professional leading talents in the rehabilitation field

2024

Organized the "Talent Development Program for Young People with Disabilities"
